1 Afghani, Afghanistan, 2002 (1381 AH)
1 Afghani banknote of Afghanistan, printed in 2002 (1381 as per the Islamic calendar) - this banknote was printed immediately after a new, US backed government, was formed in Kabul. The obverse of the note features the seal of Da Afghan Bank - the Central Bank of Afghanistan. The reverse has an image of the Blue Mosque - a famous shrine in the Afghan city of Mazar e Sharif. This is the only time banknotes of 1 Afghani have been printed.
The US invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 - less than a month after the September 11 attacks masterminded by Osama bin Laden, who was being sheltered by the Taliban regime of Afghanistan. Kabul fell to Americans in November - and a new, US backed regime was formed shortly after. The new currency was a part of the reforms brought by this regime. After 20 years of occupation, the US left Afghanistan in August 2021, to be replaced by Taliban again.
