1 Deutsche Mark (West Germany), 1948

1 Deutsche Mark banknote of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany, zone occupied by the US, UK, and France), printed in 1948. These notes were introduced on June 20, 1948 - and became the sole legal tender in the tri-zone (zone controlled by the Western powers). This happened shortly before the Soviet Union imposed a blockade on West Berlin - leading to the Berlin Airlift. These notes mark an important point of divergence between the victorious powers of the World War II, and their split into two blocs. The 'B' overstamp on these notes indicates they were for use in Berlin - the pre-war capital of Germany, which was also split between the two factions.
