1 Dollar, Singapore, 1967-72

  • Rs. 1,700.00

1 Dollar banknote of Singapore, printed 1967-72. This is the first series of banknotes issued by Singapore, and is called the Orchid series, as each note features a different type of Orchid. The reverse features a housing estate.

Singapore was governed separately from Malaya during the British era - it was under direct British rule, while the Malay peninsula retained local rulers. However, its currency was the Malay dollar - or the Straits dollar. Singapore attained self government in 1959, but continued to use the Malayan dollar. It merged with Malaya in 1963, but was expelled from the federation in 1965. Singapore came out with its first set of banknotes in 1967 - initially pegged against the British Pound, briefly gold, and then the US Dollar.
