1 Dong, South Vietnam - National Liberation Front, 1963-68
1 Dong banknotes of South Vietnam - a country in Indo-China that existed from 1955-1975. These notes were issued by the National Liberation Front - or the Viet Cong - the communist insurgents fighting against the U.S./West backed government of South Vietnam. Despite French and later, American backing, South Vietnam was overrun by communist forces in 1975, marking the end of the country.
The obverse of the note features farmers harvesting rice, while the reverse features students in a class. These banknotes were meant for circulation in Viet Cong controlled territories, and were printed in China - however, they were either never issued, or were issued in small numbers. Many of these notes were captured by South Vietnam/US forces during their invasion of Cambodia in 1970 - to act against Viet Cong bases.
