1 Drachma, Greece, 1944

  • Rs. 1,400.00

1 Drachma banknote of the Kingdom of Greece, issued in November 1944 - shortly after the country was liberated from the Axis powers (Nazi Germany and Italy). This note carries the denomination, the issuing authority, and the date on the obverse. The reverse features a phoenix rising from flames - a classical Greek symbol of rebirth and national resurrection - signifying the rebirth of Greece as the country emerged from Axis occupation.

Greece had faced hyperinflation and famine during the German occupation. After the German withdrawal in October 1944, the British supported government in exile returned to Athens, but the country was divided into royalist and communist factions. After the liberation, Greece had to introduce a new drachma and withdraw the occupation era currency. This note was a part of that transition.

Size: 70 mm* 50 mm
