1 Gulden/Satoe Roepiah, Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), 1943

1 Gulden/Ropeiah banknote of Dutch East Indies, or Indonesia, printed in 1943. Dutch East Indies, which later became Indonesia was under Japanese occupation at that time, and these notes were printed by the Netherland Indies Government in Exile - which was based out of Australia. The obverse has a portrait of Queen Wilhelmina to the right, and the coat of arms to the left. The reverse carries the denomination and a warning against counterfeiting in two languages. 

Japan started landing in Indonesia in early 1942 - shortly after their attack on Pearl Harbor (Dec 1941) - and defeated the Dutch forces and took control of Indonesia in March 1942. Japanese occupation lasted till August 1945, and created conditions which catalyzed Indonesia's nationalist movement. Indonesian nationalists declared independence in August 1945 - shortly after Japan's surrender in World War II - precipitating a war of independence against the Dutch, who sought to re-assert control. Japanese wartime occupation had a similar affect in Vietnam and Burma as well.
