1 Kip, Laos, 1979
1 Kip banknote of Laos People's Democratic Republic (LPDR) - printed from 1979-1988. The obverse features a parade with a rifle and a flag, along with the coat of arms of LPDR. The reverse has a classroom, with the teacher pointing at a map of Laos.
These notes were printed in 1979 - four years after the communist takeover of Laos in 1975. Laos achieved its independence from the French in 1953, but faced a civil war between the royalist and the communist (Pathet Lao) factions. Pathet Lao was supported by the communist regimes of Vietnam and the Soviet Union, while the monarchy was supported by the U.S., as a part of its strategy in Vietnam. Pathet Lao took over Laos in December 1975, soon after the communist victory in Vietnam and abolished the monarchy.
