1 Lek, Albania, 1976

1 Lek banknote of Albania, printed in 1976. The obverse features a peasant woman holding a sheaf of wheat, standing next to a mechanic. These are symbols/characters commonly found on communist motifs. The reverse features an old castle. This particular series was printed from 1964-1976 - 

Albania came under communist rule after the Second World War, which lasted till 1991. Initially, Albania aligned itself with the Soviet Union, but broke off with the USSR in 1961 to align with China. The government introduced a new currency in 1965 - of which the above note was a part - and which continues to be in use.
