1 Lira, Italy, Allied Occupation Money, 1943
One Lira banknote of Italy, issued during the allied occupation of Italy (1943-47) during and immediately after the World War II. Italy was the first of the Axis Powers (Germany, Japan, and Italy) to be invaded, and the Southern half of Italy was invaded and captured by the allies in 1943. These banknotes were printed by the Allied forces and were put into circulation alongside regular Italian currency. The notes have a simple design, with the designation, date, and region mentioned on the front. The reverse has lettering over a decorative background, and lists the four freedoms (freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, freedom from fear). The allied issued banknotes remained legal tender till 1950, after which they were exchanged for newly issued Italian banknotes. In practical terms, the 1 lira banknote was worthless due to high inflation.
