1 Mark, Osnabruck - Weimar Germany, 1921

1 Mark banknote issued by the City of Osbabruck, a town in Northern Germany. The obverse of the note features Rathaus (Town Hall) of Osnabruck - a famous building where the Peace of Westphalia treaty was signed in 1648, ending the Thirty Years War. This treaty is considered a foundational event in establishing the modern nation state. The reverse features the coat of arms of the city. These notes are 'notgeld' or emergency money, which became common in Germany and Austria after World War I, when coins went out of circulation (as the metal was worth more than face value), and paper money became worthless.
