1 Palestine Pound, Israel, 1948

  • Rs. 8,800.00

1 Palestine Pound banknote issued by the Anglo-Palestine Bank, 1948. The note has text in Hebrew and Latin on the front, and Arabic and Latin on the reverse. These notes were printed in 1948 by the American Banknote Company. These notes say 'Palestine Pound' - the currency of British Palestine from 1918 onward. This was the first banknote of the State of Israel.

At the time of Israel's independence in 1947-48, no reputed printer was willing to print banknotes for a country that didn't yet exist. The Anglo-Palestine Bank, a Jewish owned bank, placed an order for its own banknotes with the American Banknote Company. These notes were not marked as legal tender, as that would make them a foreign currency and would require approval from the US Government. The words 'legal tender to pay any amount' were added later. Thus, a private bank issue became the first banknote of Israel. The Anglo-Palestine Bank later became the Bank Leumi, and remains an important financial institution in the State of Israel.
