  • Rs. 7,200.00

1 Piastre banknote of French Indo-China - which covered modern day Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos - printed from 1942-45. The obverse (lower scan) has images of junks and sampans - traditional boats on the left, and the denomination on the right. The reverse (top scan) has a guardian figure in the middle, with text in Vietnamese and Chinese in the center. There is a warning in French against counterfeiting these notes.

These notes were printed in Hanoi by the Bank of Indo-China - a French bank. The World War 2 started in September 1939, and France surrendered to Germany in June 1940 - following the French surrender, a collaborationist 'Vichy' regime was installed in France. Japan, which was allied with Germany, invaded the French colonial possessions in September 1940, but allowed the colonial government to remain in place and issue currency till March 1945, when the Japanese took full control.
