  • Rs. 500.00

1 Ringgit banknote of Brunei, printed in 1984, with  the portrait of Hassanal Bolkiah (born 15 July 1946) is the 29th and current Sultan of Brunei on the obverse. The reverse features an aerial view of Bander Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei.

Brunei is a small country on the island of Borneo - one of the largest islands in the world and the only island (not a continent) divided amongst 3 countries - Indonesia (73% of the landmass), Malaysia (26%) and Brunei (1%). At the beginning of the colonial era, Brunei was an important regional power but started to lose territory to various rivals. In 1841, Brunei had to cede Sarawak to Charles Brooke (White Rajah of Sarawak), followed by the island of Labaun to Britain in 1846. In 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate - with a British resident exercising significant influence over external relations - which lasted till 1984. Oil was discovered in 1929, making it one of the richest countries in the world.
