1 Rupee, Afghanistan, 1920
1 Rupee uniface banknote of Afghanistan, printed in 1920 AD - shortly after the Treaty of Rawalpindi (1919) with the British - recognizing Afghanistan as an independent state. This was the first banknote ever to be printed in Afghanistan. These notes were printed during the reign of King Amanullah Khan (1919-1929). The center right carries the coat of arms of King Amanullah, while the lower side carries text in Persian script. These notes were printed in booklets, and could be detached along the perforation on the left side. The perforation stub is present in these notes.
During the 1800s, Afghanistan was a buffer state between the Russian Empire and British India. The British were wary of expansion of the Czarist Empire in Central Asia threatening their Indian possessions, and sought to install their chosen king in the country - which led to the various Anglo-Afghan wars. By 1919, Russian expansion was no longer a threat - due to the Bolshevik revolution, and Britain was exhausted from the World War I, and hence chose to leave Afghanistan altogether. These notes are from an important juncture in Afghan history.
