1 Rupee, Ceylon, 1942
1 Rupee banknote of Ceylon, printed in 1942. The obverse features a portrait of King George VI on the left, and the watermark window to the right. The reverse features a mahout (elephant handler) riding an elephant with palm trees in the background.
These notes were printed from 1941-49. During early days of World War II, Singapore (and Malaya) had fallen to Japan and Ceylon was under Japanese threat. As a part of the war preparation, coins were withdrawn from circulation or melted, and replaced by these notes.
