1 Shekel, Israel (1978)

  • Rs. 425.00

1 Shekel banknote of Israel, printed in 1978. The obverse carries a portrait of Sir Moses Haim Montefiore (1784-1885) - a prominent British Jewish financier and philanthropist. He advocated for greater rights for Jews in UK, and also travelled to other countries (Damascus - then in Ottoman Empire, Russia and elsewhere) to ask for better treatment for Jews. He also funded schools, synagogues and hospitals in Jerusalem. The reverse of the note has an image of the Jaffa Gate - one of the eight historical gates in the walls of Jerusalem, and the Tower of David. These notes were introduced in 1978 to replace the Israeli Pound - which had lost value during the 1970s due to high defense spending by Israel. The Shekel remained Israel's currency till 1986 - when it was replaced by the 'New' Shekel - again due to high inflation (over 400% during one year). This particular series is now called the Old Shekel.

Size: 135 mm* 76 mm
