1 Shekel, Israel (1986)
1 Shekel banknote of Israel, printed in 1986. This is the 'new' Shekel, introduced after the old Shekel - which was Israel's currency from 1980-86. During the 1970s and early 1980s, Israel faced high level of inflation - partly due to its high defense spending - and the currency lost its value. This new currency replaced the old at the rate of 1 New Shekel = 1,000 Shekels (Old). The obverse features Moses Maimonides (1135 AD-1204 AD), also known as Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, or the acronym Rambam. He is considered to be one of the most influential Jewish philosophers in history. He wrote the Mishneh Torah, a 14-volume work of Jewish law, in Hebrew. The reverse has a stylized view of Tiberias, where Maimonides is buried.
