1 Yen, Japan, 1946

  • Rs. 250.00

1 Yen banknote of Japan, issued in March 1946, shortly after the end of the World War II. The obverse features a portrait of Ninomiya Sontoku, a Japanese agricultural reformer. The lower mid part of the note features a rooster on a pile of maize and wheat. The reverse carries an ornate pattern, with the denomination mentioned in Japanese and English.

These notes were issued as a part of the currency reform of 1946. In the months following the end of the World War II, Japan faced shortages of almost everything, as well as hyperinflation. In February 1946, the government imposed a freeze on bank deposits - allowing only small amounts to be withdrawn to meet everyday expenses, and demonetized the old currency, forcing people to exchange old notes for new, revalued Yen banknotes. This shock reform formed a basis for Japan's later economic recovery.
