1 Yuan, Taiwan, 1961

1 Yuan banknote of Taiwan, Republic of China, printed in 1961 - to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Republic. China became a republic in 1912, when the monarchy was abolished following a revolution in 1911. From the 1920s, there was a civil war between the republican government and the communist party - which resumed after the Second World War, and was eventually won by the Communist Party of China. Republic of China government was confined to the island of Taiwan. The obverse of the banknote features an image of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, a Chinese revolutionary who is respected by both the sides (Communist and Nationalist). 

Taiwan regards itself as the rightful government of entire China. However, the government in Taipei (Taiwan) is not recognized by most countries across the world, including India, and the United Nations. About a dozen countries - mostly in Latin America/West Indies, the Pacific Island States, and Vatican, recognize Taiwan as the legitimate government of China.
