10 cent, British East Africa, Edward VIII, 1936
10 cent coin of British East Africa (present day Kenya), minted in 1936. These coins carry the name of Edward VIII, the British king whose reign lasted for less than 1 year (during 1936) - he had to abdicate the throne because of his intention to marry Wallis Simpson - a twice divorced American socialite - a major scandal in that era. Because of his short reign, coins of Edward VIII were not minted in UK, Canada, Australia, India, or any of the major colonies - making these a numismatic rarity.
The obverse carries an image of the British Crown, along with the ruler's name and the denomination, inscribed around the central hole. The reverse carries the date. These coins were minted at Heaton mint (Birmingham).
