100 Marks, Germany, 1920

  • Rs. 600.00

100 Mark banknote of Germany (Weimar Republic - 1919-1933), issued shortly after the end of World War I. The obverse features the head of the 'Bamberg Horseman' of the Bamberg Cathedral, on the upper left and right, above the seals of the Reichsbank. The revere has the denomination in large font, surrounded by intricate geometric patterns.

This was a period of economic instability in Germany, which eventually became the hyperinflation of 1922-23. The hyperinflation was caused by the debt that Germany had taken on to finance the War, and was triggered by a Franco-Belgian occupation of the industrial district of Ruhr - to force Germany to pay a war indemnity. When prices rise by over 50% in a month, it is considered a case of hyperinflation. At its worst phase, prices of goods in Germany would change daily - sometimes the prices of food in a restaurant would change while the patrons were dining! The German hyperinflation and the consequent economic suffering was one of the factors that led to the rise of Hitler.
