1000 Dong banknote of South Vietnam - printed in 1972. This was a part of the last series of banknotes of South Vietnam - a country in Indo-China that existed from 1955-1975. South Vietnam was a part of the Western Bloc, and was subject to a popular insurgency backed by the communist North Vietnam. Despite French and later, American backing, South Vietnam was overrun by communist forces in 1975, marking the end of the country.  

The obverse of the note has an image of the Palace of Independence, while the reverse has the image two elephants along with their handlers. The water mark is a portrait of a young woman, Madame Nguyen Van Thieu, wife of last president of South Vietnam. This entire series of notes is known as the Palace of Independence/Animals series, as the obverse carried an image of the palace, while the reverse carried an image of an animal.
