20,000 Mark, Germany, 1923

  • Rs. 225.00

20,000 Mark banknote of Weimer Germany, issued in Feb/March 1923. These notes became worthless in weeks (if not days) due to rampant hyperinflation - by end of 2023, notes of 1 Trillion (1 followed by 12 zeroes!) had been issued in Germany. Because these notes were printed in a rush, the designs were simple.

The hyperinflation was caused by the debt that Germany had taken on to finance the War, and was triggered by a Franco-Belgian occupation of the industrial district of Ruhr - to force Germany to pay a war indemnity. When prices rise by over 50% in a month, it is considered a case of hyperinflation. At its worst phase, prices of goods in Germany would change daily - sometimes the prices of food in a restaurant would change while the patrons were dining! The German hyperinflation and the consequent economic suffering was one of the factors that led to the rise of Hitler.
