5 Centavo, overprinted on 50 Cruzeiro, Brazil, 1967
5 Centavo banknote of Brazil, overprinted on older 50 Cruzeiro banknote, 1966-67. In 1967, Brazil carried out a currency reform converting its old Cruzeiros to Cruzeiro Novo at the rate of 1000:1. Centavo was 1/100 of a Cruzeiro Novo, and the old 50 denomination thus became equal to 5 Centavos. The obverse has a portrait of Princess Isabel of Brazil, famous for signing the 1888 proclamation abolishing slavery in the country. The reverse has an allegorical figure representing Lady Liberty.
