5 Cruzado Novo, Brazil, Overprint, 1989
5 Cruzado Novo banknote of Brazil, over-printed on a 5,000 Cruzado banknote. This was during the 1980s-90s era, when Brazil faced persistent high inflation, including hyperinflation, and currencies lost their value quickly. The Cruzado was a new currency introduced in 1986, to replace the old Cruzeiro at the rate of 1000 Cruzeiros = 1 Cruzado. The Cruzado itself lost value quickly, and was replaced at the rate of 1000:1 by the Cruzado Novo in 1989 - this note. The Cruzado Novo lasted less than a year, and was replaced in 1990 by a new Cruzeiro. The obverse of the note features an image of Candido Portiniari - a well known Brazilian painter, and the reverse depicts him drawing one of his famous works.
