50 Dinar, Libya, 2008

50 Dinar banknote of Libya, printed in 2008. The obverse features Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader from 1969-2011, in hat and sunglasses. The reverse features a conference center of the Ministry of Agriculture. This was the first 50 Dinar note to be issued in Libya, 

Gaddafi was a colonel in the Libyan army, and came to power after overthrowing King Idris in a coup in 1969. He nationalized Libya's oil industry, which brought prosperity to the country. Gaddafi was known for his eccentric habits: he often stayed in a tent, even during foreign visits, he had an all female bodyguard unit, and travelled with a supply of Libyan soil to stand on. Gaddafi was deposed in 2011, via a US backed civil war, assisted by its NATO allies - pushing Libya into chaos and terror. His self styled title was 'Brother Leader', while US President Ronald Reagan referred to him in more colorful words - 'The Mad Dog of the Middle East'.
