5 Dong Banknote of North Vietnam, or the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. North Vietnam, or the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, declared its independence in from France in 1945 after the Japanese surrender in World War II. While France had governed Vietnam since late 1800s, the Japanese occupied the country from 1940-45. Vietnam declared its independence in the post-war power vacuum. France tried to re-assert control after the war, leading to the First Indochina War (1946-54), which ended with a French defeat and a partition of Vietnam. The obverse of the note features Vietnamese revolutionary Ho Chi Minh, and a soldier in the jungle. The printing and the paper of these notes is of a poor quality - showing they were printed by an insurgent movement rather than a state.
