5 million dinara, Yugoslavia, 1993

  • Rs. 150.00

5 million dinara banknote of Yugoslavia - a country that existed in Europe from 1918 to 2003. It was initially formed as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, after the end of World War I. While Yugoslavia was not a part of the Eastern/Soviet bloc, it had a communist system and in 1990-92 period, its economy collapsed in parallel with the Eastern bloc. Constituent republics - Slovenia, Croatia, North Macedonia, and Bosnia & Herzegovina left the union in 1991-92. The two remaining republics - Serbia and Montenegro, formed the rump Yugoslavia state which continued to use the name till 2003, when this union too, was dissolved. The early 1990s were also a period of hyperinflation and economic collapse in Yugoslavia - which led to these high denomination notes.

The obverse carries an image of Đorđe Petrović - a Serbian revolutionary who fought against the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire. Much of the Balkans were under Ottoman occupation for centuries and gained their independence in the nineteenth century. The reverse has the image of a church.
