5 Rupees, Burma, 1938 (JB Taylor), Graded PMCS 30

  • Rs. 13,500.00

5 Rupee banknote of Burma, printed in 1938, with a left facing portrait of King George VI on the obverse, and an elephant on the reverse. The obverse also features a peacock, a common motif on Burmese currency. The languages on the banknote are English and Burmese. These notes were printed by the Reserve Bank of India, and carry the signature of JB Taylor.

Burma was a part of British India till 1937, and the Reserve Bank of India continued printing banknotes for Burma for some years after. From 1942-45, Burma was under Japanese occupation - the Japanese introduced their own rupee, which lost value because of over-printing. After the Japanese were expelled, the Reserve Bank of India again printed special notes for Burma - British-Indian banknotes with an over-print saying 'For Use in Burma Only'. Burma continued using the Rupee as its currency for some years after independence (in 1948), and the Kyat was introduced as currency in 1953.
