  • Rs. 1,600.00

50 Afghani banknote of Afghanistan, printed in 1978 during the short lived Khalq government. The obverse carries the coat of arms of the Khalq faction, while the reverse has an image of Dar Al Aman palace in Kabul.

Afghanistan has had a turbulent history since the 1970s. In 1973, the Kingdom of Afghanistan was abolished by Muhammad Daoud, the King's cousin, in a bloodless coup. Daoud appointed himself the President and the Prime Minister. In 1978, Daoud was overthrown by what is called the Saur revolution, by the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA), which declared Afghanistan to be a Marxist-Leninist republic. PDPA had two factions - Khalq (radical) and Parcham (moderate). Initially, the Khalq faction formed the government. The Khalq government was overthrown in 1979, with help from the Soviet Union, paving the way for US intervention, and the Afghan civil war.
