50 Riyals, Iran, 1980-81 (Provisional issue, Type 3)
50 Riyal banknote of Iran, with an Arabesque design overprint covering the portrait of Mohammed Reza Pahlavi - the last king of Iran. There is a calligraphic Persian text on the left, over the watermark window - covering the watermark image of Reza Pahlavi. The reverse features the tomb of Cyrus the Great, the first Persian emperor who established the Persian Empire. These notes were issued by Bank Markazi, the Central Bank of Iran. These banknotes were issued immediately after the Iranian revolution, when the new government used stocks of existing banknotes with crude overprints to obliterate Pahlavi's portrait. The overprinting was also a symbolic gesture - to show that the Shah had been replaced by the new regime. These notes were a provisional issue, till the new regime could issue its own banknotes.
Mohammed Reza Pahlavi was the last king of the Pahlavi dynasty, the last royal house to rule Iran. While Iran modernized during his reign, his autocratic rule and perceived Western cultural influence led to unrest and he was overthrown by a popular uprising in 1979. While the 1979 revolution united leftists, Islamists and nationalists - it was the Islamic faction that eventually prevailed.
