50 Tomans/500,000 Rials, Iran, 2025
50 Toman or 500,000 Rial banknote of the Islamic Republic of Iran, printed in 2025. The obverse features an image of the shrine containing the tomb of Imam Reza, the eighth imam of Twelver Shias. The reverse has an image of Mount Damavand, a dormant volcano and the highest mountain in Iran.
The Rial has been Iran's currency since 1932 - and has lost value due to inflation. Iran has also been under heavy American sanctions since the Islamic revolution of 1979 - one of the reasons for its weak economy. The official exchange rate of Rial in November 2025 is 42,100 Rials per US Dollar - meaning this banknote is worth close to $12. However, the market exchange rate is close to 1,080,000 Rials per US Dollar, meaning the market value of this note is less than half a dollar.
Of late, Iran has been trying to phase out the Rial, in favor of the Toman, at the rate of 1 Toman = 10,000 Rials. Showing '50' of the '500,000' is a part of this shift.
