500 million mark, Germany, 1923
500 million mark banknote of Germany, printed in 1923. These notes are from the post World War I period (the Weimer Republic) in Germany - when the country faced hyperinflation. The hyperinflation was caused by the debt that Germany had taken on to finance the War, and was triggered by a Franco-Belgian occupation of the industrial district of Ruhr - to force Germany to pay a war indemnity. When prices rise by over 50% in a month, it is considered a case of hyperinflation. At its worst phase, prices of goods in Germany would change daily - sometimes the prices of food in a restaurant would change while the patrons were dining! The German hyperinflation and the consequent economic suffering was one of the factors that led to the rise of Hitler.
This is a uniface note - with text on one side and the other side blank. The simple design was due to the emergency nature of their issuance - old notes lost value in days, and new, higher denominations had to be brought in quickly - with little focus on design.
