500 Yuan, Republic of China, 1950s

500 Yuan banknote of the Republic of China (1912-1949) issued by the Central Bank of China. The obverse carries a picture of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the founder of the Republic of China. These banknotes were originally issued in 1945, when China was under the nationalist government (Kuomintang, KMT) and which subsequently lost the civil war to the communists in 1949. From 1949 onward, the nationalist government was confined to the island of Taiwan and operates with limited international recognition. These notes continued to be printed and used in Taiwan till its new currency replaced the old Yuan. This note represents an interesting part in political and monetary transition of China.
