Ceylon, 1 Rupee, 1939, Graded PMCS 25

  • Rs. 8,500.00

1 Rupee banknote of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), printed in 1939. The note has an ornate 1 inside a rosette on the obverse, along with the signatures of the two Commissioners of Currency. The note carries inscriptions in English, Sinhala and Tamil. The reverse doesn't have any text, but has guilloches (intricate, repetitive pattern) in blue color. There are visible perforations on the left side.

While Sri Lanka is close to India, it was governed separately as a crown colony since 1815 to its independence in 1948. Sri Lanka also had rupee as its currency, but this was different from the British Indian rupee. These notes were printed by Thomas De La Rue of London.
