Germany, 1 Mark, 1920
German 1 Mark Darlehnskassenschein (Loan Office Note) issued in 1920 - these notes were first introduced in 1914 during the First World War due to a shortage of coins - which were hoarded for their metal. These were an emergency issue to deal with shortage of older currency. These banknotes were not legal tender, however they had to be accepted by all public treasuries. Their value was guaranteed by loans on industrial and agricultural goods. Even without the status as legal tender Darlehenskassenscheine were a de facto currency widely used as a parallel currency to the Goldmark during WWI and the beginning of the Weimar Republic. These notes remained in use till the German hyperinflation of 1923.
