Half Israeli Pound, 1958, Walks of Life

Half Pound Israeli banknote of 1958, part of the 'Walks of Life' series showing people from different professions. This note features a pioneer-woman soldier holding a basket of oranges, with fields in the background. The reverse depicts the entrance to the Tombs of the Sanhedrin (also called the Tomb of the Sanhedrin) in Jerusalem — a rock-cut burial complex from the late Second Temple period (1st century CE). The note carries inscriptions in English, Hebrew, and Arabic. 

From 1949-1980, Israel used the Israeli Pound as currency - its value set equal to 1 British Pound in 1949. The Israeli Pound replaced the older Palestinian Pound, which was the currency during the British mandate period. From 1949-1951, Israeli banknotes were issued by the Anglo-Palestine Bank - a Jewish bank. In 1951, this became the Bank Leumi - which is still a commercial bank in Israel. In 1955, issuance of banknotes was taken up by the Bank of Israel. The Pound was replaced by the Shekel in 1980, after years of high inflation destroyed its value. These notes were demonetized in 1984.
