Russia, 1 Ruble, 1917-18

  • Rs. 1,800.00

1 Ruble banknote of Russia, issued during 1917-18, in the early Soviet period. The obverse carries the Coat of Arms of Russia (a double headed eagle) to the left and the Emperor's monogram to the right. The reverse has Russian Imperial double headed eagle inside the wreath. The obverse side has a blue print, while the reverse is red print. The obverse says 'State Credit Note' and the reverse says that the note can be exchanged for gold. Both sides have intricate guilloche patterns - fine, interlaced decorative lines that served as an anti-counterfeiting measure.

While these notes carry the date 1898, they were printed much later - at the time of Russian Revolution (1917). This particular design was first used in 1898, but it was a common practice in the Russian Empire to keep designs unchanged for several years - two decades in this case. These notes have a short number HB 499 for the note in the scan - the same number was used for a large number of notes - the number is not a unique identifier on these notes, unlike today. The last three digits indicate the exact time of printing:
1-127: Printed by Imperial Russia during 1915-16
128-310: Printed by Provisional Government in 1917
311-524: Early Soviet notes, printed 1917-18

The notes were printed in the early Soviet period.

Size: 150 mm* 90 mm
