Satu Rupiah, Indonesia, 1964

  • Rs. 1,500.00

Satu Rupiah (One Rupiah) banknote of Indonesia, printed in 1964. The obverse features a portrait of President Sukarno, while the reverse features Garuda Pancasila - Indonesia's national emblem, and a woman in traditional dress with rice stalks. Both the sides use guilloches and geometric security patterns - intricate, repetitive, and interlacing fine-line patterns commonly used in security printing to prevent counterfeiting.

Sukarno was an Indonesian leader who advocated for Indonesia's independence from Dutch rule. He collaborated with the Japanese during World War II to advance Indonesia's interests, and declared independence from Dutch in 1945, after the Japanese surrender. He became the first President of Indonesia, and by 1963, had declared himself President for life. While he was stripped of power in 1966 and formally removed from Presidency in 1967, he continues to be revered as Father of the Nation.

Indonesia witnessed high inflation in the early 1960s (100% in 1961, 200% in 1962, and over 600% by 1965). This was caused by a centrally planned economy and high spending on military and infrastructure projects.  These banknotes were a part of the new Rupiah brought out in 1965, at the rate of 1,000 old rupiahs to deal with Indonesia's hyperinflation. Mismanagement of the economy was one of the reasons for Suharto's ouster.
