Silver Chuckram, Travancore, 1700s-early 1800s
Silver 1 chuckram coin of the Kingdom of Travencore, minted from 1700s to early 1800s. The obverse carries a crescent with diamond above and two curved lines and ten pellets below - believed to be a representation of the feet of Lord Vishnu. The reverse has a crescent with 12 pellets - representing the 12 zodiac symbols. These coins may have been minted during the reign of Martanda Varma (1729-58) or Gouri Laxmi Bayi (1811-15), or some of the other rulers of Travancore.
A chuckram was 1/28 of a rupee. This is one of the smallest coins to be used for regular circulation anywhere in the world.
